Origins and History of Tantra

"Tantra" is a Sanskrit word that translates roughly to "weaving" or "loom," a reference to the Tantric teachings as representative of the divine "machinery" upon which all of the creation is "woven." When Tantra first appeared around the 5th Century B.C. (although it came to its height in the first millennium A.D.), it began as a spiritual rebellion against the then-prevalent traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism. Whereas the older religions taught that one needed to reincarnate thousands of times before one could achieve enlightenment, Tantra taught that enlightenment was accessible in this lifetime. Hinduism and Buddhism held that monks and priests were the vessels through which the divine was manifested on Earth, but Tantra taught that people needed no intermediary between themselves and the divine.
